**What It Means:** **Multiple Disabilities (MD)** is when a child has two or more disabilities that together create unique challenges in learning and daily life. These challenges are more complex than a single disability and require extra support and teamwork from families, teachers, and specialists.
Children with multiple disabilities may have a mix of physical, emotional, intellectual, or sensory needs. Every child is different, and so is the plan to support them.
**How It Might Look in Children:** - Needs help with moving, speaking, learning, or behavior - Uses a wheelchair, walker, or other equipment - Struggles with communication or understanding - May need help with daily tasks like dressing, eating, or following routines - May show signs of more than one disability (for example, intellectual disability and vision impairment)
**How the School Can Help:** - A strong, personalized IEP with input from multiple specialists - Support in both academics and life skills - Physical, occupational, or speech therapy - Communication tools like picture boards or voice devices - One-on-one or small group instruction in a safe, caring space
**How I Can Support You:** - Help you understand your child’s needs and strengths - Be a guide through the special education and IEP process - Support in building a care team around your child - Emotional support for families balancing many roles - Coordination with school, health services, and other programs
> “Your child’s abilities matter more than their challenges. With love and support, they can grow in their own way.”
