Special Education & IEP Help Understanding Special Education & How We Support Your Child
---
Every child learns differently. Some need more time. Some need more movement. Some need a calm voice and a safe space. That’s where special education (SPED) comes in.
If your child is struggling in school or seems frustrated, distracted, or behind, they may qualify for support through an **IEP (Individualized Education Program)** or a **504 Plan**.
This page helps you understand what those are, how to get help, and how I walk with you and the school every step of the way.

What Is Special Education? Special education is extra support given to children who have disabilities or learning challenges that affect their success in school. It might include help with reading, writing, behavior, speech, or focus.
Your child may qualify if they: - Are behind in reading or math - Have trouble with behavior or staying focused - Struggle with communication or sensory issues - Were referred by the school, Head Start, or doctor
---
What Is an IEP? An IEP (Individualized Education Program) is a written plan created for students who need extra help in school. It includes: - The child’s strengths and needs - What the school will do to help - Accommodations (changes to work or classroom) - Goals and how progress will be tracked
The plan is made by a team: the parent or caregiver, teacher, special education staff, and sometimes a counselor (like me).
---
What Is a 504 Plan? A 504 Plan is for students who don’t need full special education services but still need some changes in the classroom to help them succeed. This might include: - Extra time on tests - Quiet space to work - Frequent breaks
---
What’s the Difference? An IEP provides specialized instruction and is more in-depth. It’s for children who need changes to both what they’re learning and how they’re learning. A 504 Plan is for students who can learn the general curriculum but may need changes to how it’s delivered. What parents need to know: Both plans can help your child succeed. You have the right to ask questions, request a meeting, or get support. I can help you understand what your child qualifies for and how to make sure their needs are met. ---
