Speech or Language Impairment

What It Means:

A Speech or Language Impairment is when a child has trouble speaking clearly, understanding others, or expressing themselves with words. This can affect how they learn, make friends, and feel confident.

How It Might Look in Children:

- Hard to understand when they speak

- Difficulty putting words together or using full sentences

- Trouble following directions or answering questions

- Frustration when trying to talk or be understood

- Speaking much less than other children their age

Some children have speech delays. Others may have conditions like stuttering, articulation problems, or language processing challenges.

How the School Can Help:

- Speech therapy with a licensed speech-language pathologist

- Practice with sounds, words, and communication skills

- Extra time to respond in class

- Visual supports or picture cards

- Helping teachers understand how to support the child

How I Can Support You:

- Help with the referral process or IEP evaluation

- Attend school meetings and explain speech services

- Support your child’s confidence and emotional growth

- Teach simple strategies for communication at home

- Connect families with outside speech services if needed

A child’s voice is powerful — even if it takes time to grow. Every child deserves to be heard.

If your child struggles with speech or language, you are not alone.
